COLLEGE STOLL: A Place to be
The establishment has gained the reputation of having formed many of those who have made a name for themselves in the country
By Victorine BIH
Situated a few kilometers from the heart of Akono is an institution which has stood the test of time. College Stoll is a catholic school which offers both technical and general education. Enrolment for now stands at 900 students.
College Stoll was founded in 1963 by the late Arch Bishop of Yaoundé Jean Zoa and inaugurated in 1965 by the then Director of Cabinet at the former Ministry of Education, Youth and Culture Paul Biya. It owes its name to the founder of the catholic mission, Father Antoine Stoll. The college was first under the supervision of the Marist Brothers from a Canadian school. In 2004 though, the management was handed over to the Yaoundé arch diocese with Father Antoine Roger Evounda as principal. The general education section has both the first and second cycles while the technical section has just the second cycle.
The school has sixty two permanent and twenty four part time teachers. Those of the technical section are engineers from Lycée Technique Nkolbisson in Yaounde. Recruitment is done with precautions and follows standard procedure. Those for the first cycle are required to have at least the advanced level while those of the high school should be holders of at least a Bachelor's degree.
Life at school
College Stoll welcomes students from in and out of the country. Admission is open to students of all faiths who are willing to study. Religious studies is however compulsory for all and students can be transferred from one catholic school to another. Prospective students have to go through an entrance examination which comes up every August. Tuition fees for boarders stand at 364.000 FRS Cfa and 100.000 FRS Cfa for day students in the technical section. Statistics from the school however indicate that enrolment has dropped as the years go by. The reasons advanced for this include the declining popularity of boarding schools and the high fees. The students also do optional subjects like drawing, drama, music and sports, which is a must.
College Stoll is also known for excellence in sporting activities. The school has a football academy which has trained many renowned sportsmen, showing their prowess in different clubs abroad. As far as competitions are concerned, the school is considered the best in the division and even in the province. It also offers other sporting activities like basketball, volleyball and handball.
Academic excellence
Most official examinations are organized in the college. With a number of buildings spread out across fourteen hectares of green land, the college can accommodate close to 1500 students. There are thirty classrooms, three computer halls, a multimedia center with a cyberspace, eight dormitories, two amphitheatres, two drawing halls, two laboratories, an artistic and a football training center and a sick bay.
For the past three years, College Stoll has performed excellently during national exams like the Baccalauréat and the probatoire. BAC classification put the school at the 47th position out of 600 schools, last year. According to the Dean of Studies Betene Mathieu, the school recorded an 85% success rate in the just ended BAC exams
College Stoll has produced renowned personalities in the country such as Catherine Abena, current Secretary of State in the Ministry of Secondary and the auxiliary Bishop of Yaoundé Christophe Zoa. With its beautiful and quiet environment, it is not only an attractive site for visitors and tourists alike, it also has a splendid architectural outlook and a good geographical set up considered convenient for studies. Indeed, it is a place to be!
